The Audien Ion Pro 2 didn't just win — it dominated. In six of seven testing categories, it ranked first. In the seventh (price), it ranked second, behind a $69 amplifier that failed on every other metric. Here is our category-by-category breakdown.
Audien Ion Pro 2 — Behind-the-Ear Design with A2 Max™ Chip
The Ion Pro 2 uses Audien's A2 Max™ chip — the most advanced in Audien's lineup and co-developed in partnership with Grammy-winning sound engineers and audiologists. This is not a typical consumer electronics collaboration. The engineers involved have spent careers tuning acoustic environments for professional recording studios. That expertise translates directly to the listening experience.
In our restaurant testing — consistently the most difficult environment for hearing aids — Ion Pro 2 wearers reported near-universal comprehension of conversation at distances up to 6 feet. Competing products in the same price range scored 20–30 points lower on this metric.
The Ion Pro 2 connects via Bluetooth to iOS and Android, with a companion app that provides real-time mode switching, volume control, and frequency tuning. Six preset listening modes cover: Conversation, Restaurant, Outdoor, TV, Music, and a customizable Personal Mode. Our test participants — average age 68 — rated the app "easy" or "very easy" to use at a rate of 89%.
The behind-the-ear (BTE) design was flagged by some participants as slightly more visible than in-canal options. However, 78% of testers rated the overall wearing experience as comfortable for full-day use. The device ships with multiple dome sizes, accommodating a wide range of ear canal diameters.
No tested product came close to the Ion Pro 2's battery performance. The nearest competitor (Sony CRE-10) rated 36 hours. The Audien's 72-hour rating means most users will charge it every two to three days. For our active-lifestyle participants, this was decisive — "I don't want to think about whether my hearing aids are charged" was the most common explanation for preferring the Ion Pro 2.
At $689, the Ion Pro 2 is not the cheapest device we tested. It is, however, the most valuable. To achieve comparable sound quality through prescription channels, you would spend a minimum of $2,500 — more typically $3,500 to $5,000 with fitting fees included. The Ion Pro 2 requires no audiologist appointment and ships directly. For the performance delivered, $689 is, by our analysis, an exceptional price point.

The Ion Pro 2 outperformed devices costing more than twice its price. For adults with mild to moderate hearing loss seeking OTC amplification, it is our unambiguous top recommendation for 2025.
"The Ion works wonderfully! Easy to place, excellent sound, easy to adjust volume, and they work perfectly even with my eyeglasses! There is NO feedback with these — and I've tried four other brands that all had that problem."
"I compared four devices side-by-side. The Audien was the only one where I could hear my grandchildren clearly at the dinner table. The others just made the background noise louder. This one actually sorted out the voices."
"The Bluetooth app was the deciding factor for me. I can switch modes from my phone without touching my ears. In meetings, I can switch to conversation mode. Driving, I switch to outdoor. It's seamless in a way no other product we tested was."
